 A Fair & Free Press?

10th November 2009

In the edition of the Daily Telegraph last Saturday a letter was printed from a Mr. Tom Bell-Roberts of Burford, Oxon which read:

"SIR - I wish David Cameron and politicians of all colours, would open a proper debate over whether we want a looser European Union or the United States of Europe.

Although I'd vote against the latter, it would surely be better to discuss openly the possibility rather than suffer the current game of Grandmother's Footsteps, where integration enthusiasts try to impose political union by stealth, while denying it every time we turn to look."

A response was promptly e-mailed to the Daily Telegraph the same day, which read:

"SIR, In answer to Tom Bell-Richards letter, November 7, "I wish David Cameron, and politicians of all colours, would open a proper debate over whether we want a looser European Union or the United States of Europe."

Oh how we have tried, Mr. Bell-Richards - three times David Cameron has been asked to debate Britain's membership of the European Union and three times he has declined. One can only presume he is unable to justify his views.

Unfortunately the Daily Telegraph did not select the response for inclusion in the following Monday's printed letters. But hey, we can't have any criticism of David Cameron, can we?
